The good news is that car thefts are down across the country. However, nearly one million vehicles were stolen last year and drivers need to continue to be on alert to keep from becoming a victim themselves. Here are 5 tips to help make your vehicle less desirable to car thieves:

Stopping Car Theft1. Install Security Devices

It is very important for your vehicle to be equipped with a security device. Many people are anxious to install the latest features in the car, but often leave out those that add security to the car. Car alarms, vehicle tracking systems, and steering-wheel locks are some of the basic devices that should be considered to prevent auto theft.

2. Always Lock Car Doors

And never leave your car running. Even if you just running in a store or your home to grab a quick item. That’s plenty of time for a thief to drive away with your car. Nearly half of all vehicles stolen were left unlocked.

3. Park in A Safe Place

Park your car in a well lit, public area whenever possible. The more eyes on it will be more difficult for a thief to do anything to it. At home, obviously your vehicle is safer parked in a garage than in your driveway or on the street.

4. Keep Your Windows Rolled Up

When no one is in the vehicle, keep the windows rolled up. Having the doors locked will not help you if the windows are left down.

5. Tint Your Windows

Tinted windows make it harder for thieves to see inside the vehicle to determine how to break in. It also keeps them from easily seeing any items that may be inside your car.

6. Avoid Leaving Personal Items in Your Car

Don’t leave personal items, especially expensive items, inside an unattended vehicle. Thieves will break into your car for almost anything purses, backpacks, shopping bags, you name it. Often they have no intentions of actually stealing your car; they’re only interested in what’s inside.

7. Don’t Leave Your Keys Inside

Don’t leave your keys inside your car and definitely don’t try to hide a spare key under the bumper. Car thieves know that many people do this to keep from locking themselves out and will be looking for a spare.

Following the above steps will surely help you in preventing auto theft. Car thieves are looking for the most vulnerable vehicle they can find. If you make it difficult or even appear difficult to steal your car they will just move on and find an easier target.
