With the holiday travel season fast approaching, it’s important to know how to protect yourself against common travel problems that can turn your Christmas cheer into a nightmare, not to mention add more expenses to an already budget-breaking season.

Here's a handy guide to help you stay clear of common travel problems:
  • Holiday Travel TipsMake a list of what you are packing; keep this list in your carry-on luggage. You can use this list if you lose your baggage to let you know if anything is missing, and you can double check the list before checking out of your hotel to be sure you didn’t leave anything behind.

  • Always carry money, ID, valuable and important documents credit cards and driver's license with you. Never pack your jewelry, wallet, keys, medications and cameras in your checked baggage.

  • When you check in, double check the claim checks and destination tags the attendant puts on your bags. Be sure that the destination tag is labeled with your final destination, not your layover destination.

  • Always pack a change of clothes and basic toiletry items in your carry-on bag.

  • Be sure your bags have a comprehensive and complete ID tag. This tag should include your name, telephone number and even your email address clearly marked both inside and outside.

  • Be prepared to wait. Winter weather is unpredictable, and can upset your travel plans. Never travel the day of a holiday party or get together, give yourself at least one full day (preferably two days) to get where you’re going so you’re not stressed out if your flight is delayed.

  • Be sure to get a flu shot, carry hand sanitizer and drink plenty of water while traveling. Germs are everywhere in airports, buses, and truck stops. Protect yourself so you don’t have to spend the holidays with the flu.

  • Scan in your passport and email a copy of it to yourself. That way, if your passport or ID gets lost, you can open up your email, print off a copy, and the security guards can look it up by the number.

  • Pack light. If you’re traveling to see family for the holidays, lighten your load by giving gift cards, cash, or scheduling shopping time in after you are in town.
Whenever you travel by air, land or sea, be sure to adequately prepare and use common sense to prevent a loss. Always double check your traveler’s insurance, medical and auto policy before heading out. If you have questions or concerns about your current Louisville insurance policies, our knowledgeable agents at Claude Reynolds Insurance are always here to help. And most of all, enjoy your trip.
