Just like car drivers, bikers need to have adequate insurance coverage before they head out onto the road. Motorcycle policies have nearly the same options as auto insurance, and selecting the right coverage for you, your bike, and your area can be a daunting task. Not all motorcycle insurance policies are created equal and purchasing specialty insurance can be confusing if you are not clear on what your options are.

Liability Insurance

TYPES OF MOTORCYCLE INSURANCEWhat It Covers: Liability insurance covers any damage you cause to others or to property. Anytime you are at fault, liability coverage steps in to cover.

What It Does Not Cover: This policy does not cover you or your bike at all. It is simply designed to protect other people from damage you may cause. Some policies may cover a passenger, some do not.

Collision Insurance

What It Covers: Collision insurance pays for damage to your motorcycle, less your deductible, regardless of fault.

What It Does Not Cover: This does not protect against non-accident related damage such as weather, fire, or theft. It also does not cover any bodily injuries.

Comprehensive Insurance

What It Covers: Comprehensive covers everything from head to toe. In most cases, it covers both the bike and the rider against accidents and other damage and perils.

What It Does Not Cover: Comprehensive coverage is the best coverage option you can get, but it may not always provide enough coverage for lost wages and medical treatment.

Uninsured / Underinsured

What It Covers: This coverage provides protection should you become involved in an accident caused by another driver, and the other driver is either without insurance or has inadequate insurance coverage.

What It Does Not Cover: This coverage is designed to help the individual, not the property. Your policy must include uninsured motorist property damage coverage, to protect your bike as well.

Most insurance companies will tailor a policy to fit your individual needs and allow you to put together a custom insurance policy with the coverage you need. Your coverage may be your personal choice, but some type of motorcycle insurance is required by law.

This doesn't mean that you have to purchase the most expensive coverage available, much like car insurance, liability coverage is mandatory. Most states only require this minimum liability coverage policy, the rest is up to you. Your additional coverage options depend on your individual factors such as your age, budget, type of motorcycle and how often you ride.
