Energy bills usually take a big chunk of a homeowner's paycheck. There are many simple things you can do to drastically lower your energy bills. By saving energy around your home, you will have cash left over for other things your family needs. You'll also be setting a great example by doing something positive for the environment. Follow these four simple tips and you will see a drastic reduction in your monthly utility bills.

Lower Your Energy Bill1. Invest in double-paned windows, better insulation, and other energy-saving home improvements.
The bulk of most homeowners' energy spending comes from heating and cooling. If you invest in some improvements into your home's energy efficiency, you will see the return in the years to come. Remember that most investments you make in energy-saving technology for your home pay for themselves over time. If you sit down and do the math, you'll find that a single payment can help you save hundreds or thousands of dollars over the years. The advantage of this is that, once you've gained back the initial investment, it's all gain.

2. Take the same approach to energy-saving appliances.
When it comes to wasting energy, refrigerators and washing machines are two of the biggest culprits. Consider selling your current energy-wasting appliances and trading them for more energy-efficient models. Again, instead of thinking of the up-front cost, factor in how much energy you save per month. Then figure out how long it will be before the appliance pays for itself. Look at it as an investment. Often, for a onetime payment of $300, you are getting a machine that effectively pays you $600 over a 10 year span.

3. Light bulbs are big energy wasters!
Keep the lights off if you aren't using them. This is hard to do if everyone doesn't pitch in, so make sure to have everyone in the family do it. Replacing your incandescent light bulbs with energy-saving bulbs is also a great investment. Energy-saving light bulbs pay for themselves in just a couple of months.

4. Make your family energy conscious.
The best thing you can do to keep energy costs down is to make sure everyone in your family is aware of how much energy they spend every day. Some easy habits that can drastically reduce energy spending are: turning the lights off when leaving a room, knowing what you want before opening the refrigerator door, taking less time to shower, waiting for a full load before doing laundry, and many others.
