Insurance coverage varies by a number of factors. One important factor is location. Kentucky home insurance is unique and includes coverage for a wide range of perils, but it doesn’t protect against everything. In addition, prices for different coverage can range greatly depending on the area you live.

Kentucky Home Insurance – What Is Covered and What Is NotFor example, hurricane insurance in Denver, Colorado will likely be less expensive than hurricane insurance in New Orleans. Understanding what is covered in your state and more importantly, what is not is essential to obtaining adequate coverage for your home and family.

What Is Not Covered?

Kentucky home insurance provides a wide range of coverage, but there are a few important exclusions that homeowners should be aware of. These exclusions include:

Luxury items over $1,500

Sewage backup

Specific aggressive dog breeds

In order to obtain coverage for any of the above perils, it may be necessary purchase a separate “rider” policy in addition to your standard homeowner’s insurance. A rider policy may be an inexpensive option to provide additional protection and peace of mind.

What you’d like to insure, and the level of protection will determine the cost of a rider policy. For example, if you have a wide collection of valuable jewels, firearms, or other collectibles, you will need a separate rider policy to adequately protect those luxury items.

What is Covered in Kentucky?

Kentucky home insurance policies provide protection for your home and personal property against loss caused by the following perils:
Tornadoes, including wind damage

Storm damage, including rain, snow and hail storms

Some luxury items (only up to $1,500 generally)

In the state of Kentucky, if you have a shed or other structure on your property, they are also automatically covered. In addition, Kentucky makes liability coverage standard with every policy. This ensures you are protected if someone is injured on your property. With some policies, identity theft insurance may or may not be included.

Severe winter including ice storms, blizzards, and snowstorms is a reality for Kentucky homeowners. Fortunately, Kentucky home insurance covers against these disasters, but it is important to note that home insurance does not protect against flood damage. So, if your basement is flooded as a result of a snowstorm, you are not covered. For this reason, additional flood insurance is often recommended.
