Do sports car drivers really speed more than soccer mom’s in minivans? Do trucks cause more accidents? To determine if the car we drive really affects driving habits, analytics company Quality Planning, ranked the vehicles most likely to be ticketed, based on the number of moving violations issued for each 100,000 miles driven. The results help insurance companies to determine rates, and may provide insight to buyers looking to purchase a new vehicle.

Most Ticketed CarsPredictably, 80% of the top most cautious vehicles were SUVs or minivans and the number one most ticketed vehicle is an expensive and fast convertible. Notably, the minivans and SUV’s are most likely to be carrying tiny people and parents who tend to be more careful and they don’t handle quite like the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Convertible, which tops the charts in most tickets.

Generally, those driving the Mercedes are successful males in their mid-fifties who probably don’t think twice about the $200 speeding ticket on their record; they simply write a check and head on their way. The Mercedes sedan model also made the list of most ticketed cars, but came in at number 6.

The number two spot on the most-ticketed cars list is held by the Toyota Camry, which probably says more about the sheer number of Camry’s on the road, rather than their drivers. Camry’s have been one of the best selling cars for years, so the odds are against them because of sheer numbers, not because Toyota owners are overly aggressive drivers or the Camry carries any risky stereotypes.

The spots in the middle of the pack are given to the Scion Coupe, Hatchback and the Hummer H2, and both of these models a thing or two about the owners. Scions are typically aimed at younger drivers, under the age of 40. Many drivers by the Scion as their first “nice” car, like a starter version of the Mustang. This means more reckless driving from younger drivers which inevitably equals more tickets. The Hummer is always in the top ten ticketed cars simply because it’s a bit hard to miss, and becomes a target for laser guns. Hummer drivers (73% of whom are male) don’t like to show restraint and like to drive a car that shows other that there is nothing they can’t do. Police officers like to correct this line of thinking.

Other cars that made the list included the Volkswagen hatchback, which appeals to younger drivers, the Pontiac Grand Prix, which is an inexpensive sporty model that is historically popular, and the Acura coupe.

Although these models don’t get the best grades in the class, it is worth mentioning those who made the honor roll. These good guys were dubbed the top five cautious vehicles, with the overall lowest percentage of violations:

5. Buick Lacrosse sedan
4. Kia Spectra sedan
3. Chevrolet C/K 3500/2500
2. Mazda Tribute SUV
1. Buick Ranier SUV
